How to make money on Discord

Like WhatsApp, Discord is a VoIP and messaging platform for communicating with others. Based on the idea of communities called 'servers', users can interact in written, audio, and even video form in chat rooms. And from now on, creators will be able to charge for admission. Here's how it works.

Discord users will now be able to earn money through monthly server subscriptions. By offering access to exclusive lounges, for example, or by offering benefits like special emojis or early access to their content. This paid subscription system offers several advantages for users.

First, creators will be able to choose their rate, between US$2.99 (RM13) and US$199.99 (RM879) per month. Regardless of the size of their community, they will still be able to monetise their server with no minimum threshold of active users, unlike other platforms like TikTok.

Another important point is revenue sharing. Discord proposes an arrangement that benefits users, with a revenue split of 90% for the server owner and 10% for the platform.

However, certain conditions must be met in order to earn money on the platform. For the moment, only US users will have access to this monetisation option. Server owners must be at least 18 years old and be US residents. Their Discord account must be in "good standing", and must comply with the platform's terms and conditions. Two-factor authentication needs to be enabled, and the server owner's phone number and email address must be verified.

Creators will need to be patient when it comes to receiving money. Users will be paid 30 days after the end of the current month. They will need to accumulate at least US$100 (RM439) to get their first transfer and have a minimum balance of US$25 (RM109) for all subsequent payments.

Server owners will also need to be careful about the themes of their content or community, with no-go topics including drugs, dangerous weapons and sexually explicit content, or promoting other sites or gambling. Political figures are prohibited from monetising their server. Discord has posted a full list of unauthorised content and communities for monetisation, and now has a portal dedicated specifically to creators. – AFP Relaxnews
